Scotland Airport Car Hire

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

There are around 40 airports in Scotland of varying sizes and structures, but the most popular Scottish airports are located in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen.

The capital city of Scotland, served by Edinburgh Airport, is situated in the south east of the country along the Firth of Forth, and due to its stunning architecture, is said to be one of the most picturesque cities in Europe with both of Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town having been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is located off the M8 motorway, about six miles west of the city, with flights to more than 100 destinations covered by 40 airlines. Owned by BAA, Edinburgh Airport has just one terminal with two runways.  Having booked car hire with easyCar, process the documentation to collect your car from the new car rental building just outside of the terminal building near domestic arrivals.

Near to the towns of Paisley and Renfrew yet just 7 miles from the city centre, is Glasgow International Airport (GLA), the 2nd busiest airport in Scotland.  A hub for EayJet, Glasgow Intl Airport shouldn’t be confused with Glasgow Prestwick Airport which is actually 29 miles from the city’s centre.  Although Glasgow International has one terminal, there are three “piers”. International flights arrive/depart from the “West”, with domestic flight from “Central” and low cost and flights to Eire in and out of the “East” pier. Collect your car rental from the terminal’s ground floor, and a simple drive out of Glasgow airport, heading towards the M8 motorway junction 28, takes you to Glasgow city in about 20 minutes.

Aberdeen Airport (ABZ) is just 6 miles from the city centre and not only serves passengers taking charter and scheduled flights but also helicopter services to the North Sea oil rigs. There are three helicopter dedicated terminals with one main passenger terminal, and the usual high street stores such as Boots, WHSmith and Dixons have available.  Outside of the airport are hotels owned by popular chains like Thistle Hotels, Travelodge and Marriott Hotels.

Originally used by the Royal Air Force during World War II, Inverness Airport (INV) is now an international airport 8 miles northeast of the city carrying around 700,000 passengers a year.  The car hire desks are in the main terminal building and to get to the city, take the A96 Aberdeen-Inverness trunk road.
