Friday, March 5th, 2010

Will there be April showers or April sunshine? Could be April snow…who knows?!

What there will be is Easter and long school holidays; the perfect time to explore many April holiday ideas and dust off your suitcases…

Easter Day is Sunday 4th April, with Good Friday the 2nd and Easter Monday the 5th, making for a fabulous long weekend.  Should you wish to holiday outside of the school holidays when holiday prices tend to drop, then stick to the last two weeks of April.

For warm April beach holidays, the Costa del Sol in the south of Spain and the Algarve in the south of Portugal are very popular Easter holiday destinations, as the temperatures rise and the smaller resorts start to open after the winter.  Book a low cost flight into Malaga or Faro, pick up a bargain car hire deal with easyCar and add cheap hotel or self catering accommodation for your cheap April holiday!

If you wish to explore, why not discover the delights of at the Neapolitan Riviera on the western coast of Italy?  Fly into Naples Airport and base your holiday on the steep hillside resort of Sorrento with its pretty maze of footpaths, many bathing platforms and pebble beaches. Visit the fishing town of Amalfi and spectacular cliff faced Positano and take a boat tour to Mount Vesuvius and the island of Ischia.  Don’t forget to spend an April day at Pompeii!

For a luxurious holiday or honeymoon in April, Tahiti in the French Polynesia is a superb holiday idea. Beautiful, romantic, full of adventure and the perfect location to escape the rat race, Tahiti could be your own paradise!  Fly into Faa’a International Airport half way between California and Australia, and explore a few of the fabulous 118 islands set in five archipelagos. On the exotic Tahiti islands, book an all inclusive package in a stunning resort, water ski, sail and snorkel, or jump in a 4×4 or quad bike, or take a tour of the islands by helicopter or speed canoe.

If the sun is too hot, then you may be in luck and the high European Ski Resorts may still have a good sprinkling of snow at the beginning of April!  High factor sun block will be a must but head to Tignes or Val d’Isere, Obergurgl or Obertauern, Les Arcs or Chamonix and you should be able to enjoy end of season skiing and boarding.  Best to look out for last minute cheap deals – just in case!

January City Breaks – Europe

Monday, December 7th, 2009

January City Break Deals are available in abundance. Christmas is over, the New Year has started and we just want the party season to continue – or simply escape it!

So a romantic weekend in Paris or a few days in Barcelona? A city break in Rome, Italy or a shopping trip in Milan and a quick trip to the ski slopes? Follow the tracks of the stars through Cannes or enjoy a cheap weekend mini break in Amsterdam? A mid week city break in Porto, Portugal or a relaxing UK city holiday in Edinburgh?

Drive, hire a car, jump on a plane or sit back on a train to Edinburgh, capital of Scotland. Spend happy at the January sales, marvel at Turner’s watercolour collection at the National Gallery and explore the Old Town and New Town of Edinburgh, a wonderful UNESCO World Heritage Site in the city’s heart with its magnificent architecture and winding streets. If you take your city break in Edinburgh during the 25th January you’ll find you’re in Scotland for Burns Night, a celebration of poet Robert Burns who wrote Auld Lang Syne.

Book a cheap flight to Porto or Oporto for a January city break in Northern Portugal. If the weather is clear take a helicopter tour of Porto flying low over the River Duoro and its many bridges, the Vila Nova de Gaia centre for Port wine production and Porto’s spectacular Cathedral. Narrow streets, lined with picturesque Portuguese houses, lead you through both modern shops and unique boutique stores and round Porto’s many monuments and museums.

The weather is generally mild in Funchal capital of Madeira Island during January. The city slopes down from 1200 metres to the harbour, and staying high in the Monte area is a great experience as Funchal is access either by gondola lift or by the famous toboggan where two traditionally dressed drivers run with a large wicker basket at speed to Livramento. A city break in Funchal can either be relaxing in one of the many beautiful four and five star hotels, or exhilarating exploring the panoramic city with its extensive shops and levada walks through the hills.

Take a short break in Rome, on the banks of the Tiber River and enjoy this spectacular historic city with its many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit the Vatican Museums and Roman Colosseum, the Borghese Gallery and stroll up the Spanish Steps. There are many archaeological sites in Rome including the Pantheon, Trajan’s Market and Forum Romanum.

Travel Tour Operators may be speculating that holiday bookings will be booked later this year due to the credit crunch, but when hiring a car, the sooner you can book the better!  Warnings were publicised throughout 2009 advising that less new cars were being ordered than previous years and that older cars were being used for longer.  The result of this was that in popular locations such as Malaga and Palma, Majorca, either no cars were available or only larger cars could be booked.  There has been no indication to say that this won’t happen again in 2010, especially during peak periods such as Half Term, Easter and the Summer – particularly July and August.  So take head – and book your cheap car hire as soon as you know you are going away!

Summer Holiday 2010 Ideas

January has notoriously been the peak period for booking summer holidays for decades and tour operators will be looking to ensure you book yours with them…

The Spanish Canary Islands are always a firm summer holiday favourite, although the Costa del Sol and the Portuguese Algarve tends to be where the best holiday deals can be found.

Greece is beautiful in the summer; explore the scenic north of Corfu for a fantastic, relaxing family holiday or buy a package holiday in the glorious sandy south and stay in the party town of Kavos. How about the pretty historic south east of Rhodes island with self catering accommodation in Lindos or a hotel in Ixia, the windsurfing favourite in the north east? Greek Skiathos island is ideal for holiday makers who like to travel but would rather not drive, as a regular bus service runs along the south coast from the beautiful sandy arc of beach at Koukounaries in the east, to the bustling capital Skiathos Town, in the west.

Combine a city break with a summer beach holiday and head to Nice in the South of France on the Cote d’Azur; a cosmopolitan city on the Mediterranean. From Nice you could head west to Monte Carlo and then onto Italy, or head east to Cannes, Cap Esterel, St Raphael and St Tropez.

The Croatian coast will be warm during the summer and perfect for family holidays or group holidays as will Algarve holidays, as both offer a good choice of budget and luxury accommodation, with a huge choice of diverse resorts.

Majorca holidays, Menorca holidays and holidays to Ibiza have been popular for a long time. There are many low cost flights to the Balearic Islands, and resorts such as Magaluf in Majorca and Ibiza Town (Ibiza) are clubbing hotspots for young party goers.  Santa Eulalia and Portinatz in Ibiza are ideal for a more relaxed and friendly holidays, whilst Port de Pollenca in Majorca and Ciutadella in Menorca are family hot spots.
