June Holidays – Europe

Monday, May 17th, 2010

June is maybe the best month to travel in Europe with the weather a little more predictable and warmer than May.

Take a city break to Paris and enjoy the delights of the Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, Eiffel Tower and Chateau de Versailles, then wander down the Champs Elysees and Rue de la Paix on the Right Bank (north of the River Seine). Retrace the steps of Picasso and Hemingway on the Left Bank, and soak up the atmosphere around Montparnasse and Saint Germain.

The Algarve in southern Portugal is perfect in June. With an average temperature of about 25C/77F during the day, the evenings are ideal for romantic walks along the many lovely sandy beaches.  You may wish to book a roomy self catering villa in Vilamoura or an apartment in bustling Albufeira or even a golfing holiday in Carvoeiro staying in a luxury but low cost hotel.  Don’t miss the chance to visit the quaint mountain village of Monchique in the Algarvian hills.

Croatia’s Dalamatia Coast is lapped by the Adriatic and enjoys a glorious Mediterranean climate.  Historic Dubrovnik is the ideal holiday location to combine a city break with a beach holiday, and is also where you may board a ferry to the island of Korcula to see the Moreska Knight’s Games.  Sailing holidays and island holidays are a great way to explore Dalamatia with the most popular islands of Vis, Hvar, Brac and Korcula excellent bases.

How about hiring a villa or gite in north west France; the region of Brittany?  The English Channel brushes the north coast with the Bay of Biscay to the south, and the mainland of Brittany surrounded by many tiny islands.  Quaint villages, coastal towns, manors, chateaux and ancient monuments are waiting to be explored in Brittany and travelling to this area of France is simple. Cheap flights from Luton to Brest with Ryanair can be combined with easyCar rental cars, or you can drive to France from the UK taking Brittany Ferries from Plymouth to Roscoff or Portsmouth to St Malo.

For spectacular views, fresh air and Alpine fragrances, Switzerland is perfect for walking holidays, mountain biking and lake sailing, historic city tours and cultural visits.  Visit Brig Belalp in the Valais for the largest open air thermal baths in Switzerland, or Chateau d’Oex for a hot air balloon ride. Trek up the Coeur du Valais or enjoy the events and sightseeing in Davos Klosters.

Where to Travel in July

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

The choice of where to travel in July is never ending. You could almost close your eyes, spin the globe and see where it stops!

The weather in southern Europe during July should be hot. The Algarve in Portugal, the Costa del Sol in Spain and the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Majorca and Minorca are all favourites with couples, groups and families during the summer.

Head to the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura or Lanzarote, and you can expect the temperature to be around 95F, so be prepared for the heat.

You can be in France in around 35 minutes by Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais or in around 90 minutes by conventional car ferry from Dover.  Northern France is a superb choice for day trips, short breaks or longer holidays, with the popular coastal town of Le Touquet offering a massive expanse of golden sandy beaches, tonnes of activities and a good choice of accommodation.

There are great offers on holidays to Greece, either on the mainland around Halkidiki, or on one of the Greek Islands such as Corfu, Crete, Kephalonia, Zante, Skiathos or Paros.  Self catering holidays in Greece are family favourites and the choice of eateries in the resorts will sure keep everyone happy.  Do arrange car hire even if just for a few days so that you are sure to experience more of real Greece!

In July you could holidays in Croatia at resorts such as Pula or Split, or further south in Turkey, for a sandy beach holiday staying in

Further afield, the USA state of Florida and the Caribbean Islands of Barbados and Jamaica are good July holiday bases.   Combine water sports in the Florida Keys with beach relaxation on the Gulf of Mexico staying in Fort Myers or maybe Clearwater, or jump on a short flight from Miami Airport to the Caribbean where the west and south coast of Barbados are ideal for sun drenched holidays.

It may be better to avoid Thailand as the monsoon season is in full swing, but Malaysia in July is dry, although may be affected by early morning Sumatras.

Driving in the Algarve

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

The gateway to the Algarve in Portugal, is Faro Airport (FAO), where hiring a rental car is very popular especially as public transport is minimal and many of the villas and apartments in the Algarve are located inland, making a car the life line to exploring southern Portugal and discovering the many beautiful sandy beaches, coves and quaint villages.

Faro is a great low cost destination, and having landed at Faro Airport, make your way through the terminal building in the arrivals hall where you will find the car rental desks represented by all the main car hire companies which are pre-bookable at bargain prices through easyCar.

When driving in the Algarve, as with most of Europe, drive on the right, don’t drive whilst talking on your mobile phone and of course, do not drink and drive!

The main roads in the Algarve, include the A22 (IP1-IC4) which runs from the Spanish border, past Tavira, Loule, north of Albufeira, Portimao and leading onto Lagos.

The EN125/N125/R125 runs closer to the coast from Monte Gordo, through Tavira, alongside the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, through the northern edge of Olhao to Faro.  From Algarve’s capital of Faro the N125-10 branches off to Faro Airport whilst the N125 IC4 heads slightly inland towards Almancil, skims the edge of Vilamoura and Armacao de Pera, travels through Porches, Lagoa, close to Portimao and Alvor, down to Lagos, through the Natural Park to Vila do Bispo close to Portugal’s west coast.  The N268 drops down from here to Sagres.

To drive from the Algarve to Lisbon the capital city of Portugal, it takes just over two hours on the A2. Join this major road between Loule and Albufeira.

Driving in the Algarve is known to be a little riskier than at home so do drive carefully and don’t get distracted! Do make sure all passengers (and the driver) are wearing seat belts – front and rear – and remember that children under 12 years may not sit in the front.
